SPRINGFIELD, Mo.. – Battle-tested with injuries, the Creighton women’s tennis team earned their first road win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
Creighton improved to 5-3 on the year, while Missouri State fell to 0-7.
The Bluejays held an early advantage in doubles as Jeanne Geary and Meredith Benson picked up the win by forfeit at the No. 3 spot due to injuries on the Missouri State roster. Kate Kruger and Gabby O’Connor clinched the doubles point for Creighton with a 6-4 victory over Missouri State’s Mara Presot and Juliette Robinson in second place in doubles.
Creighton extended his lead with straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions to clinch the game for the Jays. Second year Malvika Shukla beat Sandra Lukacova of the Bears 6-3, 6-3 in third place after Allison Wilcox picked up the win at the No. 6 position due to a forfeit to give Creighton a 3-0 lead. Benson cruised to a 7-5, 7-5 triumph for fourth in the singles to secure Creighton’s 4-0 win.
Krueger won the first set 6-4 and was tied 5-5 for first place in singles, as the rookie Valerie Negin gave up the first set, 6-3, before claiming the second frame 6-0 and led 4-3 in the third set at the No. 2 singles position before the Jays took the win.
“We limped to Springfield with multiple injuries and missed Sarah with illness,” the head coach said. Tom Lily. “Missouri State is also having its fair share of struggles, but both teams fought hard. The Bluejays return to the field on Monday, March 7 when they open the BIG EAST game against Providence in Orlando, Florida.
