Santa Anita Handicap 2022 odds, picks, contenders, post positions: Local expert reveals top predictions

A horse will become a Grade 1 winner for the first time when the starting gate opens in the 2022 Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday at Santa Anita Park. Also known as the Big ‘Cap, the legendary event quickly became one of the top races in the country after Seabiscuit tried several times to win it in the late 1930s. This year the express train formed by John Shirreffs is the 8-5 morning line favorite in the 2022 Santa Anita Handicap odds. The Ed Moger-trained Stilleto Boy is 5-2 in the eight-horse Santa Anita Handicap 2022 lineup, while the tenure trained by Brad Cox is 4-1.

The start time for the $650,000 race is 8 p.m. ET. With several accomplished horses trying to earn a Grade 1 for the first time, you’ll want to see what racing journalist and analyst Michelle Yu has to say before making any picks for the 2022 Santa Anita Handicap.

Few people in racing are as connected as Yu. A host and on-air journalist who has provided racing analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders’ Cup, Yu has spent his life in racing. Prior to her television career, she worked for coaches Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She is also married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.

She has a lot of crippling chops. In the 2011 Kentucky Derby, she correctly tabbed Animal Kingdom to win at a hefty 21-1. In the 2017 Breeders’ Cup, they beat Wuheida 11-1 away to win the Filly and Mare Turf. Last year, in a wide-open Kentucky Derby, she beat Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the 12-1 winner.

This year, his SportsLine picks hit the exact in the Sham Stakes and El Camino Real Derby. Anyone who followed his lead is upstairs. Now Yu has handicapped the Santa Anita Handicap 2022 field, made his picks and built his bets. Click here to see them.

Top 2022 Santa Anita Handicap Predictions

A surprise: Yu’s first choice is not Express Train, even though it is the favorite of the morning 8-5 line. Five-year-old son of Union Rags, Express Train has six wins, four seconds and three-thirds in 16 career starts. He is coming off a 3 1/4 length win in the San Pasqual Stakes on Feb. 5.

But the San Pasqual Stakes was nine furlongs and the Santa Anita Handicap is 10. “So far it’s 0 for 3 in his 10 furlong career,” she told SportsLine. Yu prefers two horses to the express train.

How to Make Santa Anita Handicap Selections for Saturday

Instead, Yu’s first choice is an “ultra-coherent” horse. She’s also high on a double-digit long shot that’s coming off several strong outings. She includes these horses in her 2022 Santa Anita Handicap bets, and so should you. She shares horses to support only at SportsLine.

So, who wins the Santa Anita Handicap 2022? Which double-digit long shot is a must-back? And how did Yu build her bets? Check out the latest Santa Anita Handicap odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Yu’s picks for the Santa Anita Handicap.
