NMM plants 2,000 trees to protect Mount Makiling border

NMM & Associates Customs Brokers has partnered with the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) as part of its Corporate Partnership and Environmental Restoration Program for a boundary tree planting and maintenance project organized by UBE Media on October 22, 2022, at the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve in Brgy. Put Lupa, Calamba, Laguna.

This is in accordance with Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Administrative Order No. 14-2020 which states that contract holders are required to plant 1,000 tree or mangrove seedlings.

The boundary tree planting and maintenance project aims to protect the area from encroachment, expansion and other damage that may occur along the boundary of the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve (MMFR). Specifically, it aims to plant uniquely colored vegetative markers for easy recognition and reference along the boundary of the MMFR and to strengthen community partnership for more effective monitoring and protection of the reserve. The tree species used as markers are Palawan cherry, banaba and alibangbang.

Attendees arrived at the venue as early as 6:00 a.m. and the event officially began at 8:00 a.m. Present at the event was the President of UBE Media, Ms. Donna Lina, the President of NMM Atty. Randy Nague with his wife, Farrah Nague, MCME Deputy Director Dr Rogello Andrada II, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Senior Ecosystem Management Specialist Mr Melvin Lalican, Puting Lupa Brgy. Captain Mr. Allan Pedraja and President of OneLGC Mr. Alberto Lina and his wife Mrs. Sylvia Lina. A total of 192 people were present for the event.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Lina thanked everyone for participating in this event as it will surely help future generations of the communities around Mount Makiling and beyond. Mr. Lalican stressed the importance of this project and said “bigyan natin ng puso ang ating pagtatanim dahil ito ay may buhay.” Atti. Nague echoed everyone’s sentiments and let everyone say that “a man does not plant a tree for himself but for posterity”.

After a brief orientation from Dr. Andrada, the guests were ready to begin the actual tree planting. Guests formed groups of 15 and were assisted by MCME volunteers as they spread out among the five different stations along the border. NMM has committed to planting 2,000 saplings during the year.

Guests were then treated to a simple brunch after completing their tree planting trek before wrapping up for the day.
