Dharmendra Pradhan Launches India’s First International Skill India Center, WorldSkills Academy and National Academy for Skill Teachers at SDI Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Underlining the Prime Minister’s vision of making India the skills capital of the world, Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of Education, today launched the first international Skill India Center from India to SDI Bhubaneswar.

The minister also launched the WorldSkills Academy and the National Academy for Skill Teachers at the institute and witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NSDC International with the Odisha State Government and overseas employers.

“The launch of Skill India International Centre, WorldSkills Academy and National Academy for Skill Teachers at SDI Bhubaneswar and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NSDC and international employers are great strides towards transforming the ‘India as the skills capital of the world,’ said Shri Pradhan, adding that the initiatives launched today will not only open overseas job opportunities for young people, but create a workforce of world class.

Pradhan said there are around 25 million young people in India and 75 lakh in Odisha between the ages of 15 and 25. “We will leave no one behind and ensure skills, knowledge and employability linkages for all to achieve rapid development of Odisha and India,” he said.

Speaking on the role of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Shri Pradhan said that the NEP 2020 is a guiding philosophy to turn aspirations into reality. “Over the next decade, we must collectively step up our efforts to integrate knowledge, skills and employment with flexible entry-exit to prepare our young people for the future,” Pradhan said.

While advising SDI Bhubaneswar to endeavor to create quality oriented skills opportunities, Shri Pradhan urged the other leading institutes participating in the event including AIIMS Bhubaneswar, IIT Bhubaneswar, ICT- IOCL BBSR, CIPET-IPT, IISER, Utkal University and all other universities to come forward, collaborate to increase skills and reduce employability gaps. Shri Pradhan also called on stakeholders in Odisha to take responsibility and create a benchmark model and ecosystem for quality skills development.

Among the multiple MoUs signed today, an agreement was exchanged between Mr. Ved Mani Tiwari, Director, NSDC International (NSDCI) and Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, CEO, SDI Bhubaneswar, in the presence of the Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Subroto Bagchi, Chairman, OSDA and Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra, Chairman, SDI, Bhubaneswar, and Director (HR), IOCL.

As part of this collaboration, Skill India International Center will be set up for high quality training of Indian youth, especially Odisha aspirants wishing to work abroad. The center will host training facilities to provide skills as requested by international employers in countries like the UAE, Canada, Australia and other GCC regions. The Skill India International Center will also have an extensive network of partner organizations and overseas recruiters to facilitate the sourcing of skilled and certified manpower from other countries.

Additionally, a Memorandum of Cooperation has been signed between the NSDCI and the Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) to promote international labor mobility for skilled and certified workers from Odisha to other countries. NSDCI will help aggregate demand from different countries and assist in state capacity building and OSDA will support outreach, training and funding for candidates who aspire to work overseas.

Apart from the Skill India International Centre, two other academies were launched today at SDI, Bhubaneswar. The National Academy for WorldSkills Competitions will set global professional standards, training and assessment standards and infrastructure requirements. The Academy will provide train-the-trainer, in-company training, business upgrading and testing, creating a pool of potential competitors for IndiaSkills and WorldSkills competitions.

A National Academy for Qualified Teachers was also launched today, which will provide skills to teachers and assessors in line with emerging needs in technical and vocational education. This academy would be equipped with the best facilities, infrastructure and equipment to deliver quality training programs. The academy would identify and assess the impact of emerging trends in teaching and skills provision and prepare TVET teaching staff for emerging professional roles.

On this occasion, memorandums of understanding were also exchanged between NSDCI and various international investment groups. Mr. Ved Mani Tiwari, Director, NSDCI and Mr. Tariq Chauhan, President, EFS Facilities Group exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding to collaboratively explore opportunities to establish Competence and Training Centers across India and in the world to promote the mobility of India’s internationally trained, skilled and certified workforce. EFS Facilities Group is a provider of integrated facilities management, operations and maintenance services in the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) region.

Representatives of various UAE companies were present at the event. MoUs have also been signed with EASA Saleh Al Gurg, a multi-divisional trading conglomerate in the UAE; Khansaheb – one of the leading construction companies in the UAE; Reliant HR Consultancy – a well-established workforce search firm; and ESPA – a plumbing service provider in the UAE.
