HAMMOND, Louisiana – One of the main goals set for the powerful offensive of the University of Southeast Louisiana football team by the Lion’s head coach Franck Scelfo was to make the ball run more efficiently.
The Lion’s running backs will play a big part in achieving this goal. Taron jones is the most experienced player in the room, while Jahmon mcclendon also comes back. Christian Westcott moved on to running back, while newcomers Jessie britt, Jordan griffin and Joseph wilson provide other options in the ground game for SLU.
“Taron had a fantastic camp,” commented Scelfo. “We’re looking to see who will provide that depth behind him. We have talented options, but Taron has established himself as our lucky charm going into the season.”
Running back coach Albert Porée was also impressed with Jones throughout the fall.
“Taron is our most experienced running back and he can sense the opportunity he has had after being in such a crowded backroom since he’s been here,” said Poree. “He’s the leader of our room and his high level of play set the tone for the rest of the guys.”
The talent behind Jones is also ready to contribute.
“Jessie has been a big addition for us and we’ve been very happy with Christian since switching to running back,” commented Poree. “Jahmon has steadily improved and we are really delighted to that of Joseph Wilson potential as he continues to feel more comfortable with our program. “
Britt comes to Southeastern after being a slot machine receiver to begin his college career at UMass. His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is an example of the varied way the Lions can attack their opponents with their running backs.
“When we recruited Jessie we knew he would be an asset with his ability to catch passes,” said Poree. “What opened our eyes was his ability to protect passes. With Taron, Jessie and Jahmon we have three guys that we can play in and out of the game who can help us in different aspects of our offense. . “
